"President … will announce new energy plan":
President Obama arrived in Charlotte late Wednesday morning, on a trip in which he will make a major announcement on a new program to spur growth in the "clean vehicle" industry.
The President landed aboard Air Force One shortly before noon at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport and shook hands with some of the people who gathered near where the jet was parked.
Then Obama, accompanied by North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue and Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, headed by motorcade for Mount Holly, the eastern Gaston County town where the President will tour a Daimler Trucks plant and make his announcement.
The White House released advanced word of the President's remarks in Mount Holly, saying Obama will announce a new $1 billion National Community Deployment Challenge. The goal of that program — to spur the construction and use of "clean" advanced vehicles.
Alternative fuel vehicles are being produced at the Freightliner plant.
The President's announcement is part of his administration's effort to deal with rising public anger over the spike in gasoline prices. The cost of regular fuel has climbed above $4 a gallon in many parts of the country, and Republicans say it will be an issue in this year's presidential election.
Couldn't he have made the announcement in DC and saved some jet fuel? Or is North Carolina an important state in November?
